Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from others! These are the most common mistakes customers make that lead to problems:

❌ Skipping the Primer Using only topcoat paint without Dulux 1 Step Prep leads to premature paint failure and timber damage
❌ Installing on Pavers Pavers settle unevenly and trap moisture, causing structural issues and rot
❌ Overtightening Screws The #1 cause of timber cracking during assembly. Snug is secure - don't overtighten!
❌ Painting After Assembly Missing hard-to-reach areas leaves timber exposed to moisture and weather damage
❌ Ignoring Level Ground Uneven installation causes doors/windows to stick, gaps to form, and structural stress
❌ Delaying Painting The temporary stain is not weather protection. Paint within 2-4 weeks of delivery for best results

Painting Your Products

Painting Guide

Why Painting is Essential

Hide & Seek Kids products are finished with a temporary water-based stain designed to protect timber during storage and transport. This stain is NOT a permanent finish. Painting with quality sealer and exterior paint is essential to provide long-term protection from the elements and extend the life of your investment.

Our Recommended Painting System

After consulting with Dulux paint experts, we recommend the following professional-grade system for optimal protection and longevity:

Step 1: Prime & Seal

Dulux 1 Step Prep (water-based primer, sealer & undercoat)

  • Apply minimum 2 coats to all surfaces
  • Provides mould resistance and stain blocking
  • Blocks tannin bleed and flash rust
  • Creates superior foundation for topcoat adhesion

Step 2: Protect & Color

Dulux Weathershield (exterior grade paint)

  • Apply minimum 2 coats over prepared surface
  • Choose any color to match your style
  • Provides weather protection and UV resistance
  • Creates durable, long-lasting finish
Ready to Paint Panels

Important: Don't Skip the 1 Step Prep

While it may be tempting to use exterior paint with built-in primer, this will NOT provide the same level of protection. The Dulux 1 Step Prep offers critical features including mould resistance, tannin blocking, and proper timber preparation that standard primer-in-paint products cannot match. This step is essential for extending the life of your cubby house or outdoor furniture.

When to Paint

We strongly recommend painting BEFORE assembly. This approach offers several advantages:

  • All surfaces are accessible and easier to coat thoroughly
  • Hard-to-reach areas and joints receive proper protection
  • Assembly is cleaner without wet paint
  • Better coverage equals better protection and longer life
  • Reduces risk of missing spots that could lead to weathering

Paint Application: Brush vs Spray

While spray application may seem faster, brush application is strongly recommended for best results:

Better Coverage Brushing ensures thicker, more protective coating
Paint Penetration Works paint into timber grain for superior adhesion
Longer Lasting Creates more durable finish that withstands weather
Less Waste More paint stays on the timber, not in the air
Edge Protection Better coverage on corners and joints
Cost Effective No equipment rental needed, easier cleanup

Additional Weatherproofing

For ultimate protection against leaks and rain, especially in areas prone to heavy weather:

  • Selleys Storm Sealant creates waterproof seals on any material
  • Perfect for sealing fine timber cracks and gaps
  • Can be applied before or after assembly
  • Paintable once cured
  • Excellent for roof joints, window frames, and other weather-exposed areas

Understanding Mould on Outdoor Timber

Natural Occurrence on All Outdoor Timber

Regardless of timber type or treatment, mould will eventually find its way to outdoor timber products—it's a completely natural part of the outdoor environment. The good news is that there are proven measures you can implement to slow mould growth and protect your investment.

How Mould Develops

Mould requires four key elements to thrive:

  • Moisture from rain, dew, or humidity
  • Oxygen from the air
  • Host material like timber or leaves
  • Humidity especially in damp, shaded areas

Mould spores regularly travel through the air until they find suitable conditions. In damp, humid environments, spores can rapidly flourish, resulting in dark spots on timber surfaces.

Preventing Mould Growth

The most effective prevention method is proper sealing with quality primer and exterior paint. When applied correctly:

  • Creates protective barrier against moisture penetration
  • Blocks UV rays that can break down timber
  • Prevents mould spores from establishing on timber surface
  • Makes cleaning and maintenance easier

Critical: Ensure thorough coverage of every square millimetre of your product, including all edges, joins, and hard-to-reach areas. Any unpainted timber provides an entry point for moisture and mould.

Preparing for Bad Weather

Weather Safety Notice

Hide & Seek Kids playsets are designed for regular Australian weather conditions but are NOT cyclone-rated. Severe weather requires preparation to protect your investment and ensure safety.

Before Severe Weather Arrives

  • Secure loose items including cushions, toys, and accessories
  • Cover cubby houses with tarps or weather covers if possible
  • Bring smaller pieces indoors such as chairs, tables, and decorative items
  • Remove or secure shade sails and fabric elements
  • Check anchoring and ensure ground fixings are secure

During Severe Weather

  • Avoid using play equipment during heavy rain, thunderstorms, or strong winds
  • Keep children indoors until conditions are safe
  • Monitor equipment from indoors if possible

After Extreme Weather

  • Inspect for damage including loose screws, cracks, or structural issues
  • Check for water accumulation especially in enclosed areas
  • Tighten any loose fixings before allowing children to play
  • Make necessary repairs before resuming use
  • After flooding, thoroughly inspect structural integrity and allow complete drying

Assembly Guidelines

Assembly in Progress

Assembling your Hide & Seek Kids product can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Follow these guidelines for best results:

Before You Begin

  • Read instructions thoroughly before starting assembly
  • Gather all necessary tools and materials in advance
  • Enlist a helper - a second person makes assembly significantly easier
  • Choose a clear, flat workspace with adequate room to move
  • Verify all parts are present using the instruction checklist
  • If painted, ensure paint is completely dry before assembly

Critical: Do NOT Overtighten Screws

Overtightening is the leading cause of timber splitting and cracking during assembly. Tighten screws until they are snug and secure, but not overly tight. The screw should be firm but you should NOT see timber compressing or bulging around the screw head. If using a drill, reduce torque settings or finish tightening by hand.

During Assembly

  • Follow instructions step-by-step in the exact order provided
  • Check for level and stability throughout the process
  • Tighten fasteners progressively rather than fully tightening one at a time
  • Ensure all connections are secure but not overtightened
  • Make adjustments as needed to ensure proper fit and alignment

Placement & Positioning

Proper placement is crucial for longevity, safety, and your family's enjoyment of your Hide & Seek Kids products.

Location Considerations

Good Drainage Choose areas where water drains away naturally
Avoid Low-Lying Areas Prevents flooding and moisture buildup
Adequate Ventilation Reduces condensation and mould risk
Sun & Shade Balance Some shade extends timber life, too much creates moisture issues
Distance from Sprinklers Constant water exposure accelerates wear
Clear Space Around Ensures safe play and easy access for maintenance

Level Ground is Essential

Why Level Ground Matters

Installing on uneven ground causes timber movement, resulting in gaps, warping, and structural stress. This affects durability, safety, and the lifespan of your product. Regular checking and adjusting of level is crucial for maintaining stability.

If your roof, windows, or doors look crooked: Before assuming there's a problem with the product, use a level and plumb to check if the structure is sitting level. Most "crooked" issues are actually caused by uneven ground.

Securing to Ground

Depending on your location and weather conditions, securing your cubby house or play equipment to the ground may be advisable, especially in areas prone to severe storms or high winds. Consult with a professional about the best anchoring method for your specific soil type and conditions.

Base Construction

For Ground-Level Cubby Houses:

The recommended base construction uses timber sleepers. Support must be provided for all floor joins and support is required under all walls to limit movement. Sleepers should be level and properly spaced, allowing for airflow underneath while reducing moisture and making it easy to adjust for levelness.

Base Preparation

Base preparation with timber sleepers

Sleeper Base

Proper sleeper spacing for support

Why Pavers Are NOT Recommended

Do not place pavers directly underneath cubby houses. Pavers can settle unevenly over time, leading to instability and safety hazards. They also prevent airflow underneath, trapping moisture. Instead, use level ground with timber sleepers or a proper concrete slab to provide a stable, level foundation with adequate drainage.

Ongoing Maintenance

Regular maintenance keeps your Hide & Seek Kids products safe, beautiful, and long-lasting.

Regular Cleaning

  • Clean with mild detergent and water regularly
  • Remove dirt, leaves, and debris from all surfaces
  • Pay special attention to joints and crevices where moisture can accumulate
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely
  • Remove cobwebs and insect nests regularly

Periodic Inspections

Check your products regularly (at least every 3 months) for:

  • Structural integrity - look for cracks, splits, or warping
  • Loose fasteners - tighten screws and bolts as needed
  • Paint condition - touch up any areas where paint has chipped or worn
  • Rot or decay - address immediately if found
  • Mould growth - clean and address moisture sources
  • Hardware condition - check for rust or damage
  • Safety hazards - splinters, protruding nails, loose components

Seasonal Maintenance

Before Summer: Check paint protection, apply touch-ups, ensure proper ventilation

Before Winter: Inspect for water damage, check drainage, consider protective covers

After Storms: Conduct thorough safety inspection before allowing children to play

Paint Maintenance

  • Inspect paint annually for wear, chips, or fading
  • Touch up damaged areas promptly to prevent moisture penetration
  • Consider full repaint every 3-5 years depending on conditions
  • Always use quality exterior-grade products

Understanding Natural Timber

Timber is a Living, Natural Material

Timber is a natural product that continues to respond to its environment throughout its life. Understanding these natural characteristics helps you appreciate your product and maintain it properly.

Thermal Expansion & Contraction

Timber naturally expands and contracts in response to temperature and moisture changes:

  • Dry seasons: Timber dries out, showing minor gaps and cracks
  • Humid seasons: Timber absorbs moisture, gaps close up
  • This is completely normal and does not affect structural integrity
  • Each piece responds differently based on grain, density, and position

These seasonal changes are natural and expected. Small cracks and gaps will open and close with the seasons and do not compromise the strength or durability of your product.

Natural Variations

Your timber product may display:

  • Knots and grain variations
  • Slight color differences between pieces
  • Natural markings and characteristics
  • Minor imperfections that add character

These features are part of timber's natural beauty and authenticity, not defects.

Color Variations in Plastic Accessories

Please note that plastic accessories such as slides, handles, and climbing rocks may vary slightly in color due to differences in manufacturing batches. We strive to minimize these variations and ensure consistent quality across all components. These variations do not affect the safety or functionality of the products.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Doors or Windows Won't Close Properly

Cause: Structure is not level

Solution: Use a spirit level to check if the base is level. Adjust base/sleepers to achieve level installation. Most "crooked" issues are caused by uneven ground, not product defects.

Timber Has Small Cracks or Gaps

Cause: Natural thermal expansion and contraction

Solution: This is completely normal and does not affect structural integrity. Small cracks will open in dry weather and close when humidity returns. This is expected behavior for natural timber.

Paint is Peeling or Bubbling

Cause: Inadequate primer, moisture penetration, or painting in unsuitable conditions

Solution: Strip affected areas, allow timber to dry completely, apply Dulux 1 Step Prep (2 coats), then reapply Weathershield topcoat (2 coats). Ensure proper coverage of all edges and joins.

Dark Spots Appearing on Timber

Cause: Mould growth due to moisture and humidity

Solution: Clean with mild detergent and water solution. Allow to dry completely. Touch up paint if needed. Ensure adequate ventilation and consider relocating if in overly shaded, damp area.

Screws or Bolts Coming Loose

Cause: Natural timber movement or vibration from play

Solution: Check and tighten all fasteners every 3 months. This is normal maintenance. Do not overtighten when re-securing.

Timber Split During Assembly

Cause: Overtightening screws

Solution: If split is minor, proceed carefully ensuring no sharp edges. If major split, contact customer service for replacement part. Prevention: Use lower torque settings on drill and finish tightening by hand.

Structure Feels Wobbly

Cause: Uneven base, loose fasteners, or incorrect assembly

Solution: Check that base is level. Verify all screws and bolts are properly tightened (but not overtightened). Review assembly manual to confirm all steps completed correctly. For cubby houses prone to storms, consider ground anchoring.

Adult Supervision Requirements

Supervision is Always Necessary

Adult supervision is essential whenever children are playing in or around cubby houses, beds, and outdoor play equipment. This is especially critical for younger children who may not be fully aware of potential hazards.

Supervision Guidelines

  • Always supervise children during play
  • Teach children safe play practices
  • Establish and enforce clear rules for equipment use
  • Regularly check that children are using equipment safely
  • Monitor weather conditions and restrict use when unsafe
  • Keep the play area clear of hazards

Important Safety Information

Bed Safety - Floor Beds & Low Profile Beds

Critical Floor Bed Safety Guidelines

Wall Distance: Position beds away from walls to prevent young children from becoming trapped between the mattress and wall.

Firm Mattress Required: Always use a firm mattress to minimize the risk of sleep-related accidents.

Clear Sleep Space: Keep the area around the mattress completely free from soft toys, bean bags, plastic bags, or similar items that a young child might roll onto. Soft objects can contour around a child's face and present a suffocation risk.

Safe Sleep Environment: Ensure the mattress fits properly with no gaps where a child could become trapped.

Proper Positioning: For cubby house beds and similar designs, place the headboard (rather than the side) against the wall. This prevents toddlers from becoming trapped between the bed and wall.
